SOAP OPERAS AND THE SOCIOLOGY OF LANGUAGE

THE SOCIOLOGY OF LANGUAGE AND SOAP OPERAS
It focuses upon all the topics related to the social organization of language behaviour, including not only language usage itself but also language ATTITUDES and overt behaviour toward language and toward language users.

SOAP OPERA
A television or radio story about the daily lives and  relationships of the same group of people which is broadcast regularly. (Longman Exams Dictionary .2006)
ANALYSIS OF SOAP OPERAS
 
1)TERMS OF ADDRESS:  interactional phenomena that indicate the relative STATUS of speakers, the degree of intimacy or social distance that is being conveyed, POLITENESS and other social or cultural values.
 
2-TURN-TAKING
The means by which participants in an interaction coordinate the exchange of speaking turns.
 
3- Language and gender
ØHow females and male speakers interact with one another in a variety of contexts.
5- Attitudes
LANGUAGE ATTITUDES: key concept / backbone of any sociolinguistic study.
